Hey #RIDENation,

Whether you have plans to attend this year’s All American Derby and Futurity Finals, or you would simply like to visit Ruidoso, New Mexico in the future, we’ve put together a list of our top things to do while you’re in town. Without further adieu…

#1 Attend a horse race at Ruidoso Downs Racetrack and Casino

Obviously we’ve spent a lot of time at the racetrack, after all, we are live broadcasting the triple crown quarter horse racing series, but all partiality aside, Ruidoso Downs is one of those attractions you HAVE to see if you’re visiting Ruidoso. Cheering on the races, placing bets, shopping at the gift store and enjoying lunch in the Turf Club are a few of our favorite things to do while at the track.

Betting tip: if you’re betting on the 4th race and planning on winning (let’s be real, who places a bet if they’re planning on losing), be prepared to earn yourself a ticket to pick the top four finishers in the 6th race. Depending on how lucky you’re feeling, sometimes it’s best to sit out the 4th.

#2 Enjoy dinner at one (or both) of our two favorite spots, Casa Blanca and/or Michael J’s

If you love green chiles and Mexican food, you’ll love Casa Blanca! We also recommend trying one of their top-shelf margaritas with dinner (if you’re 21 or over, of course). To check out their menu visit http://places.singleplatform.com/casa-blanca-restaurant-26/menu.

However, if Italian food is more your style, we highly recommend trying Michael J’s. Call ahead though if you’re bringing a large group, because this place books up FAST! Located just down the street from Casa Blanca, Michael J’s offers an intimate and unique setting for enjoying delicious pasta, salad, steak and fish dinners. Their wine list is also top notch (we have a few connoisseurs in house). Visit http://www.michaeljsrestaurant.com/ to learn more about the restaurant.

#3 Stay at the Hummingbird Cabins

Hummingbird Cabins is your one stop shop for vacation cabins, private homes and condo rentals in Ruidoso. Their lodging options range in size from 1 to 7 bedrooms and can accommodate up to 18 people. All rentals are privately owned and nicely decorated. For more on the different cabins they have available visit http://hummingbird-cabins.com/.

#4 Go Two-Stepping at Win, Place, Show

Located on the main drag in Ruidoso, Win, Place, Show is a friendly bar where locals and visitors love to hang out following the horse races. Their friendly staff, excellent music selection, and wonderful drink specials will have you coming back every time you visit Ruidoso. Plus, they often have RIDE TV airing on their television sets! What’s not to love!? For more on operation hours, visit their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Win-Place-and-Show/109483032423294.

#5 Hike Up The Ski Mountain

Okay, so maybe hiking is a little dramatic (you’d be hiking for a LONG time), but if you find yourself bored with nothing to do (highly unlikely) drive up to the Ski Apache Ski Resort. As you climb the mountain, enjoy wildlife sightings, amazing views, and fresh mountain air. However, avoid making the trip at dusk with skittish passengers. Situations such as these make for an interesting trip back down the mountain…travel at your own risk.

Learn more about Ski Apache here, http://www.skiapache.com/summer/.

#6 Shop at Two Bears Trading Post

If Native American jewelry is your thing, make sure you swing by Two Bears Trading post on Sudderth Dr. Along with a great jewelry selection, the shop also sells all sorts of fur, leather, home decorations, vintage clothing and more! To learn more about the store, visit their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/TwoBearsTradingPost/?fref=ts.

If we missed one of your favorite Ruidoso hot spots, be sure to leave us a comment below. We’d love to try out new and exciting places while we’re in town for the All American Derby and Futurity Finals.

Also, if you can’t make the races, don’t forget RIDE TV is live broadcasting all of the action from Ruidoso! The All American Derby Finals’ begin at 4pm ET on September 4th and the All American Futurity Finals start 5pm ET on the 5th.

Happy Trails,

- Meg
