Triple Crown Essentials
Hey RIDE TV,
Spring has arrived and with that the hype of the Triple Crown horse races. Although I spend most of my time in the show jumping ring, I love being trackside as the horses race down the homestretch.
The Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes offer something different from the average race day. Not only do we get to cheer on the best three year olds in the sport, we also get to witness extraordinary derby fashion.
I enjoy bringing my friends to the races, but they often wonder about the dress code. It is important to always be prepared. I learned this the hard way after crossing the Ascot Racecourse “dress code enforcers” fashion rules (make sure there are no spaghetti straps, fascinators, short dresses, etc. if you are headed to England!) That being said the Triple Crown tradition incorporates a different type of glam. I thought it would be helpful to do a Style Board for some race day inspiration.
In general, I chose pastel spring colors that are cheerful, comfortable and fun. Ensure that you wear practical heels as it is a long day standing. Thick heels are ideal in case you find yourself in the walking ring grass. With variable weather this time of year, bring a light jacket or pashmina. Carry a statement clutch to hold your wagering tickets…and hopefully winnings! I incorporated simple jewelry and subtle nail polish for a clean look. As per derby tradition feel free to go big with the hat. Most importantly, wear it with a smile and have fun with it!
This year I’ll toss aside my daily look of breeches and a helmet for a dress at the 142nd running of the Preakness Stakes. Looking forward to a great race day. I hope to see you out there!
