The Equestrian's Ultimate Music Playlist

As much as I like Justin Timberlake’s music and every thing he contributes to this living, breathing world we call home, I have a confession: I really wish he would stop the feeling. I can’t take it anymore. Every radio station has been playing Timberlake’s “CAN’T STOP THE FEELING” incessantly since it debuted at the beginning of the summer. It’s on every station every time I turn on the radio.

I’ve got nothing against it. It’s just as catchy as every other summer anthem, but it’s just too much. I need a little bit more variety in my playlists, and that got me thinking. Country music is rife with horse references, but which ones are the best?

In no particular order, here are some of (what I think are) the best songs about our four-legged friends:

– “Beer for my Horses” // Toby Keith ft. Willie Nelson

True, the song may not totally be about horses, but it was the song that inspired this blog. It’s a catchy tune about brotherhood and standing up against evil, which, in times like these, is something we could stand to hear about more often. Plus it has Willie Nelson in it.

– “Ghost Riders in the Sky” // Johnny Cash

It’s a classic, as is just about everything from Johnny Cash. The song invokes the classic warning tale of man confronting a crossroads in his life set to an iconic beat.

– May the Horse Be With You // Relient K

This is a bit more of a personal choice. I loved Relient K growing up. They have that classic early 2000s punk rock sound that my generation still identifies most with. Here, they use several horse-themed tropes to analogize growing up.

– “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” // Toby Keith

Again, not solely about horses, but Toby perfectly captures that dream most of us had as a child to grow up and be a cowgirl or a cowboy. And what good would a cowboy be without his horse? Plus check out Keith’s mullet!

– “Another Horsedreamer’s Blues” //Counting Crows

Like a lot of good, catchy songs, this song’s lyrics hide a dark connotation. Can your mind cut through the beat and find the meaning?

– “Back in the Saddle Again” // Gene Autry

Similar to Keith’s “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” in theme, Autry’s song romanticizes that feeling of being in the saddle on the cattle trails and back roads of the old west.

So that’s what I’ve got for you. Six songs should be more than enough to get you through a short commute. I’m curious to see how you feel about my suggestions. What did I miss? What are your favorite songs about horses?

I’ll catch y’all next week!

– Sam
